There is not a particle of life which does not bear poetry within it.

Constance DelGiudice

About

Constance DelGiudice, born in New York and now a Florida-based artist, primarily works with oil paint. She is captivated by life from the romanticism era to the onset of contemporary times, a period marked by the rise of the middle class and the growth of individuality, yet deeply rooted in strong family connections. Constance seeks to capture these themes by focusing on the everyday, mundane, and universal moments, inviting viewers into recognizable themes of warmth, safety, individuality, and occasional melancholy.

Constance's artwork draws inspiration from the old masters such as Carl Holsoe, Anna Alma-Tadema, Mary Cassatt, and Cecilia Beaux, who depicted themes surrounding women and their environments. Using classical techniques in her oil paintings, she starts with an underpainting and builds layers through glazing and opaque applications, ensuring archival and safe painting practices.

Her paintings are characterized by their soft color palette, with occasional pops of color, creating a gentle, inviting atmosphere. She often paints traditional interiors rich with fabrics, wood, and elements that tell stories of care and craftsmanship, with many interiors void of figures, allowing the space itself to speak of the lives lived within them. In her portraits of women and children, she captures the essence and individuality of her subjects through soft, emotive brushstrokes, bringing their stories to life.

Constance has always been involved in the arts, initially as a ballroom dancer and now as a passionate painter. She continues to engage in art classes out of her love for learning and improving her skills. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Constance serves as a licensed clinical mental health therapist, with a doctorate in counseling psychology. She has dedicated much of her life to helping others embrace and express their value to themselves and society.

Artist Statement

My artwork draws inspiration from the Realist tradition, capturing the beauty and dignity of everyday life with a touch of Romantic sentiment. Through the classical process of oil painting, I create scenes that reflect the lived experiences of the lower and upper middle class, focusing on traditional interiors rich with fabrics, wood, and other elements that tell stories of care and craftsmanship. These interiors are often void of figures, allowing the space itself to speak of the lives lived within them.

In my portraits, I focus on women and children, capturing their essence and individuality through careful attention to detail and soft, emotive brushstrokes. Each portrait tells its own story, reflecting moments of quiet reflection or simple daily activities, and is adorned in nice but modest fabrics that speak to a sense of authenticity and relatability.

My color palette is soft, with occasional pops of color, creating a gentle, inviting atmosphere that encourages viewers to pause and appreciate the subtleties of the scene. This approach allows me to convey a sense of warmth and nostalgia, inviting viewers to find beauty in the small, often overlooked moments of life.

While my work is grounded in the Realist tradition, it also carries a hint of Romanticism, celebrating the emotional depth and individuality of my subjects. The lived-in environments I create speak to the tenderness and dedication that goes into making a house a home, evoking emotions of comfort, love, and continuity.

Through my paintings, I aim to evoke a sense of timelessness and emotional connection, bridging the gap between the truthful representation of Realism and the emotive, introspective qualities of Romanticism. My work is a homage to the past, a celebration of the present, and an exploration of the enduring human spirit.
